By presenting different kinds of food sources to colonies ofM. sabuleti, we have demonstrated that this species regulates its foraging activity by altering the proportion of scouts that return to the nest to recruit nestmates after discovering a food source and by varying the number of nestmates recruited by a scout. These two parameters are related to the kind of food discovered. Our behavioral experiments showed that the probability that a scout returned to the nest decreased with a decreasing quantity of sucrose solution. In contrast, the number of returned scouts that elicited recruitment from the nest and the mean number of nestmates recruited by one of these scouts were independent of the quantity of the sucrose solution. Recruitment even occurred toward a 1- or 0.25-µl droplet of sucrose solution. When a scout discovered a large dead prey, a large drop of prey juice, a cluster of 30 dead fruit flies, or 1 isolated fruit fly, it always went back to the nest, but it elicited recruitment only when the food source was a large dead prey or a large drop of prey juice. No recruitment occurred when the food source was a single fruit fly and recruitment occurred only once in 30 trials when a cluster of 30 fruit flies was discovered.  相似文献

Lateralized patterns of hand use in species-typical bamboo shoot foraging were evaluated for efficiency in five female and six male gentle lemurs (Hapalemur griseus sp.). Efficiency was defined as amount of time required to complete a foraging response sequence. The foraging pattern consisted of four component movements: PULL-IN, COUNTERFORCE, TURN, and FEED-IN. These component movements had been shown in a previous study to incorporate lateral hand biases that formed subsets of patterns that were characteristic for each gentle lemur. The duration of each foraging sequence was measured from the beginning of the first component to the initiation of the terminal component. Frequency of use scores were employed to divide the pattern sequences of each subject into preferred and nonpreferred categories. A within-subjects comparison of the mean durations of preferred patterns (M = 2.56 sec) with those of non- preferred patterns (M = 3.02 sec) found that preferred patterns were executed more rapidly, t(10) = 3.36, P = .007. A multiple regression showed that order of pattern preference accounted for 89% of the variance in mean duration of response time (R2 = .89, P = .056). Thus, the use of preferred lateralized hand patterns resulted in more rapid bamboo shoot harvesting. Speed in foraging may be regarded as an adaptive strategy for a species that subsists on a high bulk, low nutrient density food such as bamboo. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

气候变化和大规模的生态恢复使中国北方旱区植被发生了显著变化,量化气候变化和人类活动对植被动态的相对贡献,对于旱区生态系统管理和应对未来气候变化具有重要意义。目前,中国北方旱区植被变化影响因素的时间动态(2000年大规模生态恢复工程实施前后)和空间异质性(沿干旱梯度)仍需进一步的定量研究。基于多源数据,采用趋势分析、偏相关分析和随机森林模型等方法,分析了1981-2018年中国北方旱区气候和植被的时空变化规律,量化了2000年前后气候变化和人类活动对植被动态的相对贡献并分析其在干旱梯度上的空间差异性。结果表明:(1)1981-2018年期间,中国北方旱区的叶面积指数(LAI)平均增加速率为(0.0037±0.0443) a-1,且增加速率沿干旱梯度增大。2000年前仅10.46%(P<0.05)的地区显著变绿,而2000年后达到36.84%,且植被变绿主要归因于非树木植被。(2)2000年后降水对植被变绿的正效应在不同干旱梯度均增加,而在半干旱区和亚湿润干旱区,温度对植被变绿由正向促进转为负向抑制,而辐射在干旱区由负效应转向正效应。(3)2000年前后,气候变化均主导着植被的动态,贡献率分别为96.07%和73.72%,人类活动的贡献在2000年后进一步增强(从3.93%增加到26.28%),且沿着干旱梯度而增加,其中人类活动对植被变绿的贡献在半干旱地区增加最显著(+0.0289 m2 m-2 a-1P<0.05)。研究结果可为未来气候变化下中国北方旱区的植被恢复和可持续发展提供科学依据。  相似文献

1. Although associative learning is widespread across animals, its ecological importance is difficult to assess because learning is rarely studied in the field, where informative cues are juxtaposed against complex backgrounds of uninformative noise. 2. Ants rely heavily on chemical cues for foraging and engage in many ecologically important interactions with plants. Nevertheless, little is known about the role of associative learning of plant chemicals in ant foraging for carbohydrates. 3. In a field setting, the present study investigated whether the distantly related ant species Formica podzolica (Formicinae subfamily) and Tapinoma sessile (Dolichoderinae subfamily) exhibited associative learning of the chemical cues from two co-occurring plant species that are taxonomically and chemically distinct (Asteraceae: Helianthella quinquenervis and Apiaceae: Ligusticum porteri). 4. For two consecutive summers, ants were trained to forage from artificial sugar-rich baits associated with the leaf chemicals from either H. quinquenervis or L. porteri for 24 h, after which a two-choice test was deployed to assess whether ants would be more likely to select baits associated with the same (versus different) plant chemicals on which they had been trained. 5. The present study demonstrates associative learning of chemicals from both plant species, and these effects were consistent between ant species and years; training increased bait occupancy from 42% on the untrained scent to 66% on the trained scent. These results indicate that associative odour-learning may be widespread across ants and serve as an important mechanism mediating ant selection of resources.  相似文献

Bacteriolytic activities of axenically grown free-living soil amoebaeAcanthamoeba castellanii, Acanthamoeba polyphaga andHartmannella vermiformis towards various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were determined. A spectrophotometric assay revealed that the specific bacteriolytic activities of bothAcanthamoeba species were higher as those of the threeHartmannella strains.Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus subtilis, Chromatium vinosum, Micrococcus luteus andPseudomonas fluorescens were more easily lysed than the other bacteria tested.Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Klebsiella aerogenes andSerratia marcescens were hardly affected at all by the amoebal bacteriolytic activities. Among the Gram-negative bacteria we observed differences in lysis sensitivity while the Gram-positive bacteria tested were sensitive to lysis. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) gel-electrophoresis in the pH range 3–10 was performed to separate the bacteriolytic isoenzymes of amoebae. Bacteriolytic patterns were shown by using an activity assay in which lysis bands were formed in the agar/bacteria gel-overlay. The activity assay revealed remarkable differences in typical banding patterns for bacteriolytic activities among amoebae. Distinct differences between typical pI points of bacteriolytic activities inAcanthamoeba andHartmannella were shown. Abstract

The way in which foraging wasps use cues for prey location and choice appears to depend on both the context and on the type of prey. Vespula germanica is an opportunistic, generalist prey forager, and individual wasp foragers often return to hunt at sites of previous hunting success. In this paper, we studied which cues are used by this wasp when relocating a food source. Particularly we analysed the response to a displaced visual cue versus a foraging location at which either honey or cat food had been previously presented. We conclude that location is used over a displaced visual cue for directing wasp hovering, although the landing response is directed differently according to bait type. When wasps are exploiting cat food, location also elicits landing, but if they are exploiting honey, a displaced visual cue elicits landing more frequently than location.  相似文献

Specialists and generalists often coexist within a single population, but the biological drivers of individual strategies are not fully resolved. When sexes differ in their foraging strategy, this can lead them to different environmental conditions and stability across their habitat range. As such, sexual segregation, combined with dominance, may lead to varying levels of specialization between the sexes. Here, we examine spatial and temporal niche width (intraindividual variability in aspects of foraging behaviour) of male and female black-browed albatrosses (Thalassarche melanophrys), and its consequences for fitness. We show that females, where maximum foraging range is under fluctuating selection, exhibit more variable behaviours and appear more generalist than males, who are under directional selection to forage close to the colony. However within each sex, successful birds had a much narrower niche width across most behaviours, suggesting some specialization is adaptive in both sexes. These results demonstrate that while there are sex differences in niche width, the fitness benefit of specialization in spatial distribution is strong in this wide-ranging seabird.  相似文献

Metabolism at the cytosol–mitochondria interface and its regulation is of major importance particularly for efficient production of biopharmaceuticals in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells but also in many diseases. We used a novel systems-oriented approach combining dynamic metabolic flux analysis and determination of compartmental enzyme activities to obtain systems level information with functional, spatial and temporal resolution. Integrating these multiple levels of information, we were able to investigate the interaction of glycolysis and TCA cycle and its metabolic control. We characterized metabolic phases in CHO batch cultivation and assessed metabolic efficiency extending the concept of metabolic ratios. Comparing in situ enzyme activities including their compartmental localization with in vivo metabolic fluxes, we were able to identify limiting steps in glycolysis and TCA cycle. Our data point to a significant contribution of substrate channeling to glycolytic regulation. We show how glycolytic channeling heavily affects the availability of pyruvate for the mitochondria. Finally, we show that the activities of transaminases and anaplerotic enzymes are tailored to permit a balanced supply of pyruvate and oxaloacetate to the TCA cycle in the respective metabolic states. We demonstrate that knowledge about metabolic control can be gained by correlating in vivo metabolic flux dynamics with time and space resolved in situ enzyme activities.  相似文献

Most studies in chronobiology focus on solar cycles (daily and annual). Moonlight and the lunar cycle received considerably less attention by chronobiologists. An exception are rhythms in intertidal species. Terrestrial ecologists long ago acknowledged the effects of moonlight on predation success, and consequently on predation risk, foraging behaviour and habitat use, while marine biologists have focused more on the behaviour and mainly on reproduction synchronization with relation to the Moon phase. Lately, several studies in different animal taxa addressed the role of moonlight in determining activity and studied the underlying mechanisms. In this paper, we review the ecological and behavioural evidence showing the effect of moonlight on activity, discuss the adaptive value of these changes, and describe possible mechanisms underlying this effect. We will also refer to other sources of night-time light (‘light pollution’) and highlight open questions that demand further studies.  相似文献
